Forest Risk Commodities

Forest risk commodities are crops or products linked to deforestation, which often involves clearing forests for agriculture or development. The production of these commodities often requires clearing forests to create space for agriculture or development. This deforestation significantly contributes to climate change by releasing stored carbon into the atmosphere and removing forests' ability to absorb carbon dioxide. It also causes biodiversity loss, threatening countless plant and animal species that depend on forest ecosystems. Some of the biggest culprits are:

  • Palm oil
  • Soy
  • Cocoa
  • Cattle
  • Coffee
  • Maize
  • Rubber

These commodities are used in a wide range of everyday products, from food and cosmetics to clothing and furniture. Due to their environmental impact, governments and organizations worldwide are increasing efforts to monitor and regulate their production to ensure sustainable practices and reduce deforestation. Deforestation is currently the second-leading cause of climate change globally, causing about 11% of all greenhouse gas emissions.
