Verdane Invests in Xpansiv to Support Environmental Markets Expansion
European growth investment firm Verdane is leading a major capital raise in Xpansiv, providing new funding for the environmental markets infrastructure company to pursue acquisitions, expand into new asset classes, and strengthen its international presence.
The companies announced the strategic partnership on September 22, 2026. Neither Xpansiv nor Verdane disclosed the financial size of the investment. They said the capital would primarily support Xpansiv's acquisition strategy as well as the development of new products and expansion into additional geographies.
Xpansiv operates infrastructure used across energy and environmental commodity markets. Its businesses cover registries, electronic marketplaces, brokerage and market execution, wholesale power services, portfolio management and market data. These services are used by companies, utilities, financial institutions, project developers and traders dealing in assets including renewable energy certificates, carbon credits, clean fuel credits and other environmental commodities.
Verdane said Xpansiv's infrastructure has become increasingly relevant as corporate reporting requirements and environmental compliance programs expand internationally. The investment firm specializes in technology-enabled and sustainability-focused companies and has raised around €10 billion in capital, completing more than 200 investments since 2003.
The investment comes as environmental commodity markets become increasingly dependent on digital systems capable of recording asset ownership, preventing duplicate transfers, connecting registries with trading venues, and providing data required for compliance and corporate sustainability reporting.
According to Xpansiv, its proprietary registries support more than 320 GW of renewable generation capacity across more than 60 countries. The company says its registry network managed approximately 28% of renewable energy certificates issued globally in 2025.
Renewable energy certificates, commonly known as RECs, represent the environmental attributes associated with electricity generated from renewable sources. Companies and other organizations can purchase and retire these certificates as part of renewable electricity procurement programs or, depending on the jurisdiction, to meet regulatory requirements.
Xpansiv also provides infrastructure for carbon markets. Its CBL marketplace supports transactions involving both project-specific carbon credits and standardized instruments, while its broader platform connects trading with registries, portfolio management and market data. The company also operates infrastructure for clean fuels, water markets and other environmental assets.
Acquisition Strategy Continues
The new capital raise follows several years of acquisitions intended to broaden Xpansiv's position across environmental commodity markets.
During the past four years, Xpansiv has acquired APX, an energy and environmental registry infrastructure provider; Evolution Markets, which provides brokerage and market execution services; and Evident, the UK-based operator of the I-REC(E) renewable energy registry.
The Evident acquisition increased Xpansiv's exposure to international renewable energy certificate markets. I-REC(E) certificates are used in numerous countries where organizations need a standardized mechanism for documenting renewable electricity generation and consumption.
Bringing registry infrastructure, marketplaces, brokerage services and data under a broader platform can potentially reduce fragmentation for market participants that currently interact with multiple systems. Xpansiv said its platform processes transfers involving hundreds of millions of environmental assets annually, while Verdane said the wider infrastructure handles approximately one billion transactions each year.
John Melby, CEO of Xpansiv, said the Verdane partnership would allow the company to move more quickly when acquiring technologies that complement its internal product development and broaden the services available to customers globally.
Growing Importance of Environmental Market Infrastructure
The investment highlights the increasing commercial importance of the infrastructure supporting environmental markets, rather than the underlying environmental assets alone.
Companies participating in renewable electricity programs, clean fuel schemes and carbon markets increasingly require systems capable of tracing certificates from issuance through transfer and eventual retirement. Reliable registry information can also become important when organizations need evidence supporting sustainability disclosures or compliance submissions.
This creates demand not only for trading venues, but also for interoperable registries, settlement infrastructure, audit trails, and standardized market data.
Xpansiv has been expanding across these areas. Its platform includes CBL for environmental commodity trading, Evolution Markets for brokerage and structured transactions, renewable energy registries, Xpansiv Connect for portfolio management and integration, and data services covering environmental and energy markets.
For corporate sustainability teams, consolidation of these services could simplify the operational side of purchasing, tracking, and retiring environmental certificates. Utilities, renewable energy developers and financial institutions could also benefit from improved connectivity between marketplaces and registries.
However, stronger market infrastructure does not by itself resolve questions surrounding the environmental quality of individual assets. In carbon markets in particular, the credibility of a credit still depends on factors such as project methodology, additionality, monitoring, verification and the durability of the claimed emissions reduction or removal. Trading and registry systems primarily provide the infrastructure through which those assets are recorded and exchanged.
Capital Targets Further Expansion
Verdane's investment adds the firm to an existing group of Xpansiv investors that includes Blackstone, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Aramco Ventures, Macquarie Group, S&P Global Ventures, Aware Super, BP Ventures and Commonwealth Bank.
The involvement of large financial and energy-sector investors reflects broader interest in the infrastructure surrounding carbon, renewable power and other environmental markets.
The immediate impact of Verdane's capital will depend on which companies, technologies or market segments Xpansiv targets next. The companies have not yet identified specific acquisitions.
Their stated strategy, however, indicates that Xpansiv intends to continue consolidating technologies and services across environmental markets while extending its platform into additional products and regions.
For companies using environmental commodities to support regulatory obligations or corporate climate strategies, the development could contribute to a more integrated market infrastructure. Its broader significance will depend on whether further consolidation improves accessibility, transparency, and operational efficiency while maintaining credible governance and competition across the markets Xpansiv serves.
