The Ministry for Science, Energy, Climate Protection and Environment of Saxony‑Anhalt has launched two funding schemes totaling €87 million to stimulate green hydrogen investments within the Central German mining region (Mitteldeutsches Revier). This initiative, financed through the European Just Transition Fund (JTF), is targeted at companies and municipalities transforming brown‑coal sites and industrial facilities into climate‑friendly hydrogen hubs.

Under the first call, €58 million is earmarked for the construction and commissioning of electrolyser units, hydrogen storage and grid connections at former power plants and mining sites. Previously capped at €650,000 per megawatt, subsidies for electrolysers have now risen to €2 million per MW, providing a more attractive incentive for developers. The second call offers €29 million for projects focused on sector coupling, including production, storage, transport, distribution and repurposing of existing gas pipelines to build an integrated hydrogen infrastructure.

Eligible applicants include public and private enterprises operating in Anhalt‑Bitterfeld, Burgenlandkreis, Mansfeld‑Südharz, Saalekreis and Halle (Saale). Applications must be submitted by 7 August 2025 via the Investitionsbank’s online portals for either the green hydrogen or the sector-coupling scheme.

“This funding round marks a major step in transforming the Mitteldeutsches Revier into a future-oriented green hydrogen economy,” Energy Minister Armin Willingmann said in the official press release. Companies and municipalities ready to engage in the structural transition are encouraged to submit their proposals ahead of the August deadline.
