Morocco is taking a significant step towards diversifying its renewable energy portfolio by exploring the development of its first offshore wind project. The Moroccan Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development has announced plans to conduct feasibility studies for an offshore wind farm along the country's Atlantic coast. The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) reports that studies indicate the country has significant potential for offshore wind development, especially along its Atlantic coast, where high wind speeds and shallow waters provide ideal conditions for fixed-bottom offshore wind installations.

Currently, Morocco relies heavily on imported energy, and the development of offshore wind power presents a substantial opportunity to increase its domestic energy production while capitalizing on the favourable wind conditions along the Atlantic.

The new offshore wind farm, which is still in the planning phase, will be located along the southern stretch of Morocco's Atlantic coast. It is anticipated that the project will have the capacity to generate a significant portion of the country’s electricity needs, pushing Morocco closer to its target of producing 52% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.

Morocco is no stranger to renewable energy development, having already made impressive strides in solar and onshore wind projects, notably with the Noor Solar Complex, one of the world’s largest. This offshore wind initiative represents a further commitment to green energy, building on the country's established track record.

The ministry has revealed that it will soon launch tenders for feasibility studies to assess the potential of offshore wind development. The government is working closely with international wind power developers to ensure that the project adheres to global best practices in terms of environmental sustainability and economic viability.

As the project progresses, it will be closely watched by energy experts and environmental advocates alike, potentially setting a precedent for offshore wind development in Africa.
