Nordic Compass is an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) database maintained by the Swedish House of Finance (SHoF) at the Stockholm School of Economics. It provides detailed sustainability information on more than 400 publicly traded Nordic large- and mid-cap companies, with historical data extending to 2013. Primarily intended for academic researchers and students, the database supports empirical research into corporate sustainability performance, financial markets, and responsible investment. By making individual company-level ESG variables available, Nordic Compass enables researchers to investigate specific environmental and social indicators and their relationships with financial performance.

Core Features

In the Nordic Compass database, information is manually extracted from corporate disclosures by trained analysts, then structured, harmonized, and checked for consistency. Its main capabilities include:

  • Comprehensive ESG Coverage: Approximately 111 variables covering environmental, social, and governance topics, allowing detailed examination of individual sustainability indicators.

  • Historical Company Data: Longitudinal information extending to 2013, covering large- and mid-cap companies listed on Nordic stock exchanges.

  • Environmental Performance Data: Company-reported environmental information that supports research into corporate emissions and other sustainability-related performance measures.

  • Corporate Governance Data: Governance indicators, including approximately 20 detailed matrices on executive compensation developed through collaboration with Nordic Investor Service.

  • Cross-Database Matching: Company identifiers, including ISIN codes, organization numbers, FinBas IDs, and GVKEYs, enabling researchers to connect ESG records with other financial datasets.

Closing Insights

Nordic Compass was initiated in 2014 and acquired by Swedish House of Finance from sustainability consultancy Resility AB in 2019. Its development has received support from Sweden's innovation agency, Vinnova, including SEK 5 million for a project running from 2022 to November 2025. Nordic Compass remains actively maintained, with its 2026 analyst recruitment programme continuing annual data collection.

The database is distributed free of charge for academic research. Access is available to Stockholm School of Economics students and staff and the Swedish academic community through SWAMID. Researchers outside these arrangements should contact Swedish House of Finance to clarify eligibility.
