Core Features
The dataset covers 198 countries and 35 climate hazards and issues, with more than 300 subnational hazard indices. Its standardized scoring also allows different risks and locations to be compared within the same analytical framework.
Physical Climate Risk: Coverage includes 17 physical climate hazards, such as extreme temperatures, heat stress, flooding, precipitation and sea-level rise. Location scores and subnational mapping help organizations identify which facilities, suppliers or investments have greater exposure.
Climate Scenarios: Climate hazards are projected across seven time periods and three scenarios: SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5. The models use CMIP6 climate data and ensembles of models used by the IPCC, allowing organizations to examine how exposures could change under different emissions pathways.
Socio-Economic Vulnerability: The data goes beyond the physical hazard itself by assessing factors that influence how well countries and societies can respond. This helps identify locations where similar hazards could have different consequences.
Climate Transition Risk: Transition indicators cover issues including climate litigation, emissions, carbon policies and progress toward climate targets. This helps companies assess the policy, legal and regulatory pressures associated with the shift toward a lower-carbon economy alongside physical risks.
Geospatial Asset and Supplier Screening: Organizations can upload the locations of assets or suppliers to Verisk Maplecroft's GRiD platform and overlay them with climate data for location-level risk assessments. National and subnational results can help identify exposure hotspots across large portfolios, operations and supply chains.
Closing Insights
Verisk Maplecroft launched the Climate Risk Dataset in October 2023 as an integrated offering covering physical hazards, socio-economic vulnerability and transition risks. It has since expanded: the original release covered 32 hazards and issues and 16 physical climate risks, while the current product lists 35 hazards and issues and 17 climate hazards.
The breadth is useful because a facility's exposure cannot always be understood from the physical hazard alone. A location may face increasing drought or heat while also operating in a country with limited capacity to adapt. Conversely, companies can face transition pressures through carbon policies, litigation and regulation even where their physical exposure is comparatively lower. Verisk Maplecroft's standardized indices allow these different dimensions to be investigated within a consistent scoring framework.
The climate data also sits within a much larger risk data ecosystem. Verisk Maplecroft covers 190+ climate, environmental, political and social risk issues, enabling users to investigate how climate exposure intersects with areas such as biodiversity, deforestation, human rights and governance. Verisk Maplecroft also provides climate risk assessment and reporting advisory services. Organizations can request a demonstration to explore the dataset and discuss particular asset, supply-chain, portfolio or integration requirements.
