Core Features
GRID is designed around large-scale building benchmarking and programme administration. It combines automated data collection, quality assurance, analytics, and reporting to help organizations and public authorities understand building performance and implement benchmarking and disclosure initiatives more efficiently. Some of its principal capabilities include:
ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager Integration – Synchronizes building attributes and utility data directly from ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager (ESPM), while also accepting information from spreadsheets and covered-building lists.
Compliance Management – Supports mandatory and voluntary benchmarking programmes by tracking submission status, identifying data quality issues, managing building contacts, and generating communications with participants.
Portfolio Benchmarking and Analytics – Provides building scorecards, year-over-year comparisons, benchmarking metrics, interactive maps, histograms, and portfolio analytics to identify performance trends and opportunities.
Building Owner Portal – Enables owners and managers to submit data, monitor submission status, receive feedback on data quality, and upload supporting information through a dedicated portal.
Public Transparency Tools – Offers public-facing dashboards with interactive maps, building summaries, and case studies that allow jurisdictions to communicate benchmarking results and highlight sustainability projects.
Programme Management Support – Combines software with implementation support, training, and guidance from OPEN's building performance specialists to help jurisdictions launch and manage benchmarking programmes.
Closing Insights
GRID was developed by OPEN Technologies with initial support and collaboration from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), reflecting a shared objective of providing jurisdictions with a consistent and scalable way to collect, manage, and analyse building energy and carbon data. Instead of serving only individual building owners, the platform is equally aimed at programme administrators responsible for managing hundreds or thousands of buildings, enabling consistent benchmarking and reporting across entire jurisdictions.
The platform has been adopted by several prominent public-sector programmes across North America. These include Building Benchmark BC, Canada's largest voluntary building energy benchmarking programme covering more than 1,700 large buildings; the City of Montréal, where GRID supports the city's greenhouse gas emissions disclosure bylaw; Better Buildings Ottawa; and the City of Madison, Wisconsin, where it provides the technology backbone for the Building Energy Savings Program (BESP). More recently, in 2026, the Capital Regional District (British Columbia) selected GRID to support its mandatory Energy & Carbon Reporting Program.
