Introduction

Cradle to Cradle Certified® (C2C) is a voluntary, third-party product certification developed by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. It evaluates products based on their safety, circularity, and overall environmental and social performance. The certification is designed around the principles of the circular economy, encouraging products to be created for continuous reuse in biological or technical cycles rather than disposal. Unlike single-issue ecolabels, C2C assesses products across multiple sustainability dimensions using a lifecycle-based approach. It is aligned with ISO 14024 as a Type I environmental label and is used globally across sectors such as construction materials, textiles, and consumer goods.

Applying for Cradle to Cradle Certification

To obtain Cradle to Cradle certification, products must be assessed against the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard. The process involves collaboration with an accredited third-party assessor and review by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute.

  • Eligibility and scoping - Companies first determine whether a product is eligible for certification and define the scope of assessment (e.g., product group or individual product).

  • Product assessment - An independent assessor evaluates the product across five performance categories: Material Health, Product Circularity, Clean Air & Climate Protection, Water & Soil Stewardship, and Social Fairness.

  • Data collection and verification - Detailed data is gathered on materials, manufacturing processes, supply chains, and lifecycle impacts. Verification may include laboratory testing and documentation review.

  • Certification decision - The Institute reviews the assessment and issues certification if requirements are met. Certification levels are awarded based on performance.

  • Continuous improvement and renewal - Certification is time-limited (typically two to three years), requiring periodic reassessment and encouraging ongoing product improvement.

Current Status & Outlook

Cradle to Cradle Certified® is widely recognised as a multi-attribute sustainability standard focused on product design for circularity. It is applied across industries including construction, textiles, furniture, and packaging. The certification framework assigns products to achievement levels—typically Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum—based on their lowest score across the five categories. This structure is intended to encourage continuous improvement over time. Recent updates to the standard have introduced stricter requirements for material health, circularity, and climate-related criteria, reflecting evolving expectations around sustainability performance.
