Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MRNE)

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is the Government of India’s nodal ministry for developing and deploying new and renewable energy. Its institutional origins date to the creation of the Commission for Additional Sources of Energy in 1981, followed by the Department of Non-Conventional Energy Sources in 1982. The department became the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources in 1992 and was renamed the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in October 2006. MNRE develops policies, programs and supporting schemes covering areas including solar, wind, bioenergy, small hydropower, green hydrogen and renewable energy research and development, with a broader mandate to improve energy security and expand clean power.
