Event Overview
On April 24, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM, participants will have the opportunity to explore NYC's largest waste recycling facility, Cooper Recycling, located at 123 Varick Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11237. This tour is organized by Urban Green Council's Emerging Professionals and aims to educate attendees about the recycling process and the importance of waste management in construction.
What to Expect
The tour will provide insights into how Cooper Recycling maximizes material recovery using advanced technology and custom-engineered equipment. Participants will learn about the certification and processing of construction and demolition waste, which currently has a recycling rate of less than 50% in NYC.
Safety Requirements
As Cooper Recycling is an active transfer station, all attendees must adhere to specific safety guidelines:
Wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty.
Sneakers or work boots are required; open-toe shoes are prohibited.
Long pants are mandatory, and long sleeves are recommended.
Personal Protective Equipment (hard hats, hi-visibility vests, glasses, masks) will be provided.
Due to the nature of the environment, participants should be aware that the ground may be slippery and dusty, and there will be stair climbing involved. Anyone with asthma or mobility issues is advised not to attend. Photography and recordings during the tour are not permitted.
Registration and Costs
The event costs are as follows:
Non-Member: $10
Core Member (including Student & Emerging Professional): $5
Trust & Leadership Level Member (including Steward & Supporter): Free Admission
Sponsor and Organizational Member: Free Admission
Registration can be completed through the Urban Green Council website.
Conclusion
The tour will conclude with the EP Spring Happy Hour at Honey’s, where attendees can network and discuss their experiences. Happy hour registration is included with the tour registration, but it can also be attended separately.
