Core Features
ECOSPEED Region combines top-down baseline data with locally collected information, allowing municipalities to begin with an automatically generated inventory and progressively improve its accuracy. Key features include:
Automatic Start Inventory: ECOSPEED can generate a pre-populated municipal emissions inventory using its existing datasets. ECOSPEED estimates this at around 95% accuracy, after which local energy, transport and other data can be incorporated.
Territorial and Causer-Based Accounting: The platform supports territorial accounting under Germany’s BISKO standard as well as a causer-based approach. ECOSPEED says the latter can better reflect local measures such as renewable electricity generation or electrified public transport.
Non-Energy Emissions: Pro and higher versions extend inventories beyond fuel and energy use to sources such as agriculture, industrial processes, waste, wastewater and LULUCF, providing broader coverage of municipal emissions.
Climate Scenario Modelling: The Scenario module models future emissions through to 2050 and lets authorities examine whether planned measures are sufficient to meet their climate targets. It can assess measures across energy production, buildings, businesses and transport.
Reduction Potential and Economics: Scenario functionality includes potential analysis, calculation of avoided carbon emissions and assessment of value creation, helping connect proposed climate measures with their expected impacts.
Community-Level Consolidation: The Community version allows individual municipal inventories to be brought together into consolidated regional structures, including districts, cantons and federal states. This supports centralized management while retaining inventories for individual participating authorities.
Closing Insights
ECOSPEED Region has a long track record in municipal carbon accounting. ECOSPEED originated at ETH Zurich in 2002, and Region followed in 2004. The company now says more than 2,500 cities and municipalities use the platform, ranging from individual municipalities to cities including Munich, Rome and Cologne. Regional deployments include the German state of Hessen and the Swiss cantons of Zurich and St. Gallen.
Its established public-sector deployments are particularly relevant for authorities seeking comparable inventories across many municipalities. In Hessen, for example, the LandesEnergieAgentur provides ECOSPEED Region licences to participating Klima-Kommunen; ECOSPEED reports that 399 of the state's 422 municipalities participate in that initiative. The platform is also used to create consolidated inventories across larger administrative structures.
Subscription for ECOSPEED Region is offered in Smart, Pro, Premium and Community packages. Premium adds scenario modelling, while Community extends the system to multi-municipality structures. As a cloud service, updates are delivered centrally, and ECOSPEED provides online user training alongside its software. For municipalities, its combination of ready-made historical data, BISKO-compatible accounting and regional consolidation can substantially reduce the work required to establish and maintain a consistent emissions inventory.
