ECO Portal operates primarily as a data access infrastructure. Its distributed model allows environmental product data to remain with individual data providers while giving downstream users a common access point. ECO Platform also establishes common requirements intended to improve consistency and quality across participating sources. Its main features include:

• EPD Data Search & Access: Users can search and access published digital EPD datasets from multiple connected data providers through one portal, reducing the need to navigate separate databases.

• Machine-Readable EPDs: ECO EPDs are made available digitally using the ILCD+EPD format, allowing environmental information to be processed directly by compatible software rather than extracted manually from EPD documents.

• Unified API: The ECO Portal API provides programmatic access to datasets across the network. Queries can return data in XML or JSON and support parameters for finding relevant datasets.

• Distributed Data Network: Rather than building a duplicate central repository, ECO Portal connects data nodes maintained by programme operators and other providers, while giving users an aggregated view of the available information.

• Quality-Controlled Data: ECO EPD Programme Operators follow common ECO Platform requirements and undergo audits, providing a quality framework for the ECO EPD data accessible through the network.

• Downstream Software Integration: The infrastructure is specifically designed to connect environmental product data with applications such as building and infrastructure LCA tools and other data platforms.

ECO Portal was launched in 2020 as ECO Platform's central access point for digital EPD data, building on cooperation with the InData initiative. From the outset, the objective was not simply to create another EPD database, but to connect existing sources using common formats and data-exchange rules. This approach allows manufacturers to provide information through a connected data node while downstream tools can access data across the network from one interface.

Its reach benefits from ECO Platform's network of EPD Programme Operators. As of July 2026, connected programmes include major sources such as The International EPD System, EPD-Global, IBU, EPD Hub and PEP ecopassport, alongside several smaller national and specialist programmes.

The portal underwent a significant upgrade beginning in 2025, including infrastructure improvements, additional data validation routines and more structured API access. General access to ECO EPDs through the website remains free, while commercial API access uses annual licensing. Current published fees are €5,000 for commercial tools and €10,000 for databases, reduced to €2,000 and €5,000 respectively for ECO Platform members; qualifying non-commercial API use is free. For LCA software providers especially, ECO Portal provides a standardized route for bringing verified product environmental data directly into downstream applications.
