Core Features
Climate Impact Checkup follows the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and combines activity-based calculations with expenditure-based estimates for selected supply chain emissions. It uses country-specific or local emission factors where available. Some of its main features include:
Scope 1, 2 and 3 Emissions Calculation: Estimates direct emissions from fuel combustion and refrigerant leaks, indirect emissions from purchased energy, and selected value chain emissions, including transport, waste disposal, and procurement.
Healthcare-Specific Emissions Sources: Accounts for sources particularly relevant to healthcare, including anaesthetic gases, metered-dose inhalers, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, patient travel, and clinical waste treatment.
Supply Chain Carbon Accounting: Supports estimates of emissions associated with purchased goods and services, including food and catering, construction, pharmaceuticals, information technology, and other procurement categories.
Emissions Benchmarking: Allows online users to compare their emissions performance with similar healthcare institutions at national, regional, and global levels, supporting comparative assessment and identification of improvement opportunities.
Reporting and Progress Tracking: Provides graphical results and printable reports, enabling facilities to document their emissions baseline, track changes over time, and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.
Offline Calculation and Training Resources: Offers a downloadable spreadsheet for emissions calculations, alongside technical guidance and a free online course covering GHG accounting, tool usage, and carbon management planning.
Closing Insights
Launched in 2021, Climate Impact Checkup forms part of Health Care Without Harm's efforts to support healthcare decarbonization. Its adoption includes Colombia's healthcare sector, where the government collaborated with Health Care Without Harm to develop emissions inventories. The State of Mexico's Center for Epidemiological Surveillance and Disease Control has also coordinated its use across 63 healthcare facilities.
CIC is free, with downloadable access available through the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals network, the ATACH community, and its training programme. For healthcare providers beginning carbon accounting, it offers sector-specific methodologies without commercial subscription costs.
