Avelia uses a book-and-claim model that separates SAF’s environmental benefits from where the fuel is physically used. Blockchain helps securely track SAF and the allocation of these benefits. Some of its main capabilities are:

• SAF registry: Maintains a digital record of SAF distribution, use, and associated GHG benefits, giving airlines, corporate travellers, logistics providers, and cargo owners a mechanism for managing environmental attributes.

• Blockchain traceability: Uses blockchain to record SAF entering the aviation fuelling network and track allocation of the corresponding environmental benefits, helping guard against erroneous double counting.

• Book-and-claim access: Allows organizations to access SAF GHG benefits without SAF having to be physically available at their departure airport or other location.

• External verification: Avelia states that its GHG data has received limited assurance following the ISO 14064-3 approach from independent assurance provider LRQA. Its verification also covers conformance with SAF carbon-accounting and insetting guidelines.

• Transparent retirement records: Its public retirement records provide information including document and blockchain IDs, retirement dates, customer types, SAF volumes, and GHG-abatement values, with customers able to disclose additional information.

• Configurable user environment: Provides customizable modules, functions, dashboards, notifications, and customer-branded documentation, supporting different participants across business travel and air freight.

Closing Insights

Avelia emerged from collaboration rather than a standalone software startup. Shell and Accenture developed the platform with support from Energy Web Foundation, while Amex GBT helped aggregate corporate demand; it launched in June 2022 with around one million gallons of SAF available. This structure connects fuel supply, technology, and corporate travel procurement around the cost and availability constraints limiting SAF adoption. Its users illustrate different applications. Bank of America joined to support its goal of having SAF account for at least 20% of annual employee air travel by 2030. Google has entered a long-term agreement to source SAF environmental attribute information through Avelia.

The platform is now evolving beyond its original Shell-centered model. Announced changes include independent data processing and hosting by Accenture, access to multiple SAF suppliers, a planned Bring Your Own SAF model, and multilateral governance. For prospective participants, its significance lies in providing shared digital infrastructure through which otherwise geographically constrained SAF demand can be aggregated, documented, and allocated.
