Core Features
Agri-footprint provides both environmental impact results and underlying unit-process data, allowing it to serve users who simply need footprint factors as well as practitioners building more detailed LCA models. Its main features include:
Agricultural LCI Database: Provides more than 4,800 datasets, covering agricultural commodities and processes across numerous countries and regions, together with processing activities such as crushing, milling, sugar processing and oil refining.
Multiple Environmental Impacts: Offers either carbon-footprint results, including land-use change, or a broader set of environmental impact categories based on the ReCiPe methodology.
Allocation Methods: Provides economic, mass and energy allocation, giving LCA practitioners different approaches for distributing environmental burdens among co-products.
Country-Specific Agricultural Data: Uses sources including FAOSTAT, primary company information and emissions models based on IPCC calculation rules to account for differences in agricultural production between locations.
Unit-Process Data: Offers interconnected unit-process datasets in JSON for detailed LCA modelling, alongside impact-result-level data for users requiring calculated environmental factors rather than complete process models.
Background Data & Methodology: Incorporates ecoinvent background information for energy, fuels, materials and chemicals, while Mérieux NutriSciences | Blonk models transport and some additional background processes itself.
Closing Insights
As of August 2026, the current major release is Agri-footprint 7.0, launched in May 2025, with subsequent 7.x-aligned updates. It updated agricultural statistics, land-use-change modelling and background data to ecoinvent 3.10, among other methodological changes. Agri-footprint is distributed through established LCA software, including SimaPro and openLCA.
Importantly, users can also license Agri-footprint as a standalone data product, rather than obtaining it only through LCA software. Version 7 introduced the cloud-based Blonk Data Hub, where licensed users can search datasets and inspect sources, methodologies and processes. Annual licences include Research, Commercial, Consultancy, Developer and Enterprise options. The Consultancy licence, for example, supports multiple users and external sharing of outputs with clients, while Developer licences permit integration into externally distributed tools and services.
Research licensing makes the database relevant to academic LCA work as well. Depending on the licence, data can be supplied through the Data Hub or at unit-process level in JSON, with XLS and CSV available on request.
