Summary

Google’s Supplier Code of Conduct establishes mandatory standards for all suppliers of goods or services to Google and its subsidiaries — including human-rights, labour, health & safety, ethics, and environmental responsibilities. Under the Code, suppliers must comply with environmental laws, reduce waste and emissions where possible, track their environmental performance when requested, and cooperate with audits and information requests. These requirements support Google’s broader ambition to reduce its supply-chain footprint and embed sustainability across its global value chain.

Introduction

The Google Supplier Code of Conduct was created to ensure that suppliers adhere to consistent standards across social, ethical, and environmental dimensions, aligning with international frameworks including labour, human-rights and environmental protection norms.

The Code covers issues from fair labour and safe workplaces to responsible environmental management — encouraging suppliers to minimise emissions, hazardous substances, waste and resource use. Since its introduction, Google has embedded the Code into contracts and purchase orders, requiring all suppliers to accept and comply with it before doing business.

Over time, as Google’s climate and sustainability commitments have advanced, the Code has become a core tool for ensuring that environmental stewardship, emissions reduction and resource efficiency are also part of procurement decisions not only for direct operations, but across Google’s supply chain globally.

Environmental & Reporting Requirements

Under SCOC, suppliers are required to comply with all applicable environmental laws and regulations, manage hazardous substances responsibly, prevent pollution, and minimise waste.

Suppliers must also be prepared to cooperate with information requests or audits from Google, providing documentation, environmental data, and evidence of environmental management systems (e.g. ISO 14001 or equivalent), when requested.

In practice, Google may ask suppliers, especially in high-impact sectors such as hardware manufacturing or logistics, to track and report greenhouse-gas emissions, energy use, water usage, waste production, and other ESG indicators. Suppliers are encouraged to improve environmental performance over time and adopt resource-efficient practices.

Current Status

Google’s Supplier Code of Conduct is fully embedded in procurement, contract and onboarding processes globally. All new suppliers must commit to the Code as part of their contract or purchase order.

Google’s latest publicly available supplier-reporting documents (e.g. the 2024 Supplier Responsibility Report) show the Code remains central to its supply-chain governance, with audits, site-assessments and targeted environmental impact initiatives across suppliers.

Google continues to engage with hardware, logistics and manufacturing suppliers to reduce environmental footprints, increase resource efficiency, and promote responsible sourcing of materials.
