United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), founded in 1972, is the UN’s leading global authority on the environment. UNEP sets international environmental agendas, supports countries in implementing treaties, and provides science-based assessments on climate change, biodiversity, pollution and sustainable development. It hosts or supports major multilateral environmental agreements, including the Minamata Convention on Mercury and the Montreal Protocol’s secretariat functions. UNEP works to strengthen environmental governance, build capacity, reduce pollution, protect ecosystems and promote resource-efficient, low-carbon development. Through research, policy guidance and global initiatives, UNEP helps governments, businesses and societies accelerate the transition to a more sustainable future.
