Summary

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is one of the UN’s five regional commissions, established to promote economic integration, environmental cooperation, and sustainable development across a broad geopolitical region. Its mandate spans Europe, North America, Central Asia, the Caucasus, and parts of the Middle East, covering 56 member countries. UNECE develops conventions, policy frameworks, standards, and best practices that support a cleaner industry, safer transport, sustainable energy, environmental protection, and improved trade facilitation. Notably, UNECE hosts several major international environmental agreements, including the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP), the Water Convention, and the Espoo Convention. Through capacity-building, data, legislative support, and technical guidance, UNECE helps countries strengthen governance, harmonise rules, and achieve shared sustainability goals.
