Summary

The Government of Portugal is the executive branch and one of the four sovereign bodies of the Portuguese Republic, alongside the President of the Republic, the Assembly of the Republic, and the courts. It is responsible for conducting the country’s general policy and directing public administration. The Government is led by the Prime Minister and composed of the Council of Ministers and several ministries covering key areas of public governance. Under the current democratic system established after 1976, successive constitutional governments have guided Portugal’s domestic policy, international relations, and economic and social development.
