Summary

The Swiss Federal Council is the federal government and highest executive authority of Switzerland. Composed of seven members elected by the Federal Assembly, it collectively directs federal policy, oversees the Federal Administration, implements legislation, and represents Switzerland domestically and internationally. Each member also heads one of the seven federal government departments. The Federal Council operates according to the principles of collegiality and consensus, with decisions taken collectively rather than under a presidential system. The President of the Swiss Confederation is selected from among the seven councillors for a one-year term and primarily performs chairing and representative functions.
