Duane Arnold Energy Center

Duane Arnold Energy Center is a nuclear power plant near Palo, Iowa, and the state’s only commercial nuclear generating facility. The plant uses a General Electric Type 4 boiling water reactor and has approximately 615 MW of generation capacity. It permanently shut down in August 2020 after damage from a severe derecho accelerated an already planned closure. NextEra Energy is now pursuing a restart, supported by up to $1.9 billion in U.S. Department of Energy financing. Subject to Nuclear Regulatory Commission approvals and refurbishment work, the plant is targeted to return to commercial operation by early 2029.
