Summary
The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is the independent organisation responsible for operating major Australian electricity and gas systems and administering associated energy markets. Established in 2009, AEMO balances electricity supply and demand, maintains power-system security, operates wholesale and retail markets and undertakes long-term energy system planning. It manages the National Electricity Market across eastern and south-eastern Australia and performs electricity market and system functions in Western Australia. AEMO also acts as the National Transmission Planner for the NEM and develops the Integrated System Plan, which maps future generation, storage and network requirements. Its role has become increasingly important as Australia integrates large volumes of wind, solar, grid-scale batteries, rooftop photovoltaic systems and household energy storage.
