Restoration
Restoration is the process of helping a degraded, damaged or destroyed ecosystem recover its ecological functions, biodiversity and resilience. It can involve re-establishing native vegetation, restoring wetlands, peatlands, rivers or woodlands, improving soil health, removing invasive species, reconnecting fragmented habitats and changing land-management practices. Restoration does not always mean returning an area to an exact historical condition. In many cases, the aim is to rebuild healthy ecological processes so that nature can recover and continue functioning over the long term. Effective restoration can support wildlife, store carbon, improve water quality, reduce flood and erosion risks and strengthen resilience to climate change.
