Mining Waste

Mining waste is the material left over from the extraction, processing, and beneficiation of minerals and ores. It can include waste rock, overburden, tailings, sludge, processing residues, and other materials that are not considered economically valuable during the original mining operation. Mining waste may contain residual metals or minerals that can later become recoverable as technologies, commodity prices, or demand change. Its management is a major environmental issue because poorly controlled waste can affect land, water, ecosystems, and community safety. Increasingly, mining companies are assessing waste as a potential secondary resource through reprocessing, metal recovery, reuse, and other circular economy approaches.
