Formula 1 has announced significant progress in its journey to reach Net Zero carbon emissions by 2030, having achieved a 26% reduction in its carbon footprint by the end of the 2024 season compared to its 2018 baseline.

Despite the sport's growth—with the calendar expanding from 21 to 24 races and fan attendance rising from 4 million to 6.5 million—F1 has curbed emissions that would have otherwise grown by 10%. Emissions now stand at 168,720 tCO₂e, down from a rebaselined 228,793 tCO₂e in 2018, following improved supplier data and updated measurement standards.

Key reductions have come from several areas:

  • Factories and facilities cut emissions by 59% through a shift to renewable energy.

  • Travel emissions dropped 25%, aided by remote broadcasting and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) use.

  • Logistics saw a 9% decrease, thanks to new freight containers, SAF use, and biofuel-powered trucks in Europe.

  • Event operations reduced emissions by 12% per race, though overall totals slightly rose due to the increase in races.

Formula 1 remains on track to meet its 50% reduction goal ahead of full offsetting by 2030, and is investing in sustainable logistics, regional equipment hubs, and advanced alternative fuels.

F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali stated, “We are proud of the real progress made toward Net Zero while continuing to grow globally. Sustainability and innovation go hand in hand.”

Ellen Jones, F1’s Head of ESG, emphasized the importance of collaboration across the sport, noting that upcoming changes, such as the 2026 race calendar shift and full adoption of sustainable fuels, will drive further impact.

Formula 1 continues to lead as a global example of sustainable innovation in sport.
