European Coffee Federation Releases Framework to Measure Coffee’s Environmental Footprint

The European Coffee Federation (ECF) has introduced the Shadow Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for coffee, marking a milestone in the sector’s sustainability journey. This framework introduces a unified, science-based method to measure the environmental impact of a cup of black coffee, aligning with EU-wide initiatives to combat greenwashing and strengthen climate resilience.

The Shadow PEFCR—so named because the guidelines mirror EU Product Environmental Footprint principles as closely as possible—was developed with support from agri-food consultancy Mérieux NutriSciences | Blonk. Created in 2023 with input from traders and roasters, the framework sets consistent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) standards to measure coffee’s footprint from farm to cup.

Until now, the coffee sector relied on diverse tools without a shared framework, creating inconsistencies that hampered transparency and comparability. The new rules clarify how to manage data quality, proxies, allocation, and emissions tracking, while considering coffee-specific factors such as processing techniques, farming practices, and brewing methods. The approach not only standardizes measurement but also enhances transparency, enabling businesses to make credible environmental claims.

The initiative comes as the EU advances regulatory measures such as the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive and the upcoming Green Claims Directive, both aimed at harmonizing environmental disclosures. By adopting the Shadow PEFCR, companies can align with these expectations, improve reporting accuracy, and foster trust among consumers and partners.

According to the ECF, the methodology offers a widely supported baseline for corporate reporting and industry innovation. The Federation is now urging stakeholders across the supply chain to integrate the framework, ensuring more reliable data, coordinated action, and stronger resilience for coffee’s future in a climate-challenged world.
