The European Commission has allocated €2.8 billion in grants to 94 key transport projects under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), aiming to modernize infrastructure, strengthen cross-border links, and accelerate the green transition. The funding will primarily upgrade railways, ports, and inland waterways while improving road safety and aviation efficiency across the EU.
Rail transport receives the largest share (77%), including major upgrades to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). Key projects include the Rail Baltica line in the Baltics and Poland, high-speed rail development in the Czech Republic and Poland, and the rollout of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) in 11 countries to enhance cross-border interoperability.
Maritime and inland waterway projects focus on sustainability, with funding for shore-side electricity in ports (Ireland, Cyprus, Malta) to cut ship emissions and icebreaker upgrades in the Baltic to protect undersea cables. France and Spain will deploy smart shipping systems to reduce congestion, while Belgium and France advance digitalization on inland routes.
Road transport improvements include safer truck parking zones in 10 countries and intelligent traffic systems for urban areas. Aviation projects will support the Single European Sky initiative to reduce delays and emissions.
The package also strengthens EU-Ukraine transport links, aiding Ukraine’s shift to EU rail standards, and funds an Arctic infrastructure project to bolster climate-resilient supply chains.
“This investment delivers on Europe’s promise of modern, sustainable connectivity,” said Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas. The grants, selected from 258 proposals, will be finalized by October 2025. With 95% of the CEF’s €25.8 billion budget now allocated, the program has supported 1,861 transport projects since 2014.
