The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has made its carbon footprint data for the 2023/2024 period publicly available for the first time. This move aims to promote transparency and inspire other organizations to take action to reduce their carbon emissions.
The data reveals that BAS’s total emissions for the year amounted to 54,549 tCO2e, with the Royal Research Ship (RRS) Sir David Attenborough being the largest contributor at 50.57%. Other significant sources of emissions include construction activities (12.86%) and business travel (9.6%).
In its push towards net zero, BAS has successfully trialed alternative fuels, including Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), on the RRS Sir David Attenborough, which now makes up a third of the ship's fuel. Additionally, a new solar energy plant installed at Bird Island Research Station is expected to reduce emissions by 50% once fully operational.
BAS has also invested in carbon literacy training for over 140 staff members, earning a Bronze Carbon Literate certification. This initiative is part of BAS’s broader commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions both at work and in the community.
