Best Buy Certifies All 29 Supply Chain Facilities as Zero Waste

Best Buy has achieved zero waste certification across all 29 of its supply chain facilities, completing a sustainability target the US consumer electronics retailer established in 2021.

The facilities have been certified under the Total Resource Use and Efficiency, or TRUE, zero waste program administered by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI). TRUE certification requires facilities to divert more than 90% of their waste from landfill while meeting additional requirements covering waste measurement, contamination, regulatory compliance, and zero waste management policies.

The milestone represents a significant expansion from Best Buy's first certified supply chain facility in Chino, California, which achieved TRUE certification in 2021. By fiscal year 2025, the company had certified 20 facilities and planned to complete certification of the remaining nine during fiscal year 2026.

Best Buy confirmed in August 2026 that all 29 facilities now meet the certification requirements.

More Than 90% of Waste Diverted from Landfill

TRUE certification is designed to assess how organizations manage materials throughout their operations rather than treating recycling as an isolated activity.

According to ESG Dive, certified facilities must divert more than 90% of their waste from landfill, conduct regular waste audits, maintain contamination rates below 10%, comply with applicable local laws and discharge permits, and operate an active zero waste policy.

For Best Buy, some of the largest material streams handled through the program are cardboard and plastic film. The company has also introduced measures covering pallets, reusable totes, packaging materials, and expanded recycling systems.

Cardboard management has been a particular operational focus. In fiscal year 2025, Best Buy installed 29 additional cardboard balers across its operations. The equipment compresses discarded cardboard into consolidated loads that are easier to store, transport, and send for recycling.

These types of measures illustrate an important aspect of zero waste programs for large distribution networks. High diversion rates generally depend not only on having access to recycling contractors, but also on redesigning how materials are handled inside warehouses and distribution centers.

Waste streams need to be identified, separated, and measured consistently. Equipment must be available in appropriate locations, while employees need procedures that prevent recyclable materials from entering general waste.

Reusing Materials Inside the Supply Chain

Best Buy has also sought to retain materials within its operations for longer before recycling or disposal becomes necessary.

The retailer reuses items including pallets and totes, while packaging processes have been adjusted to reduce unnecessary material consumption. It has also expanded recycling programs across its distribution network.

Expanded polystyrene foam, commonly known by the Styrofoam brand name, provides another example.

Best Buy uses industrial densifiers to process the lightweight foam. The equipment melts and compresses the material into dense blocks, substantially reducing the volume that needs to be transported. Those blocks can then be sent to external partners and processed into materials for products including new packaging, construction products and picture frames.

The approach reflects a broader circular economy principle: materials that would otherwise become disposal costs can potentially remain productive inputs when suitable collection, processing and end markets exist.

For companies operating large logistics networks, transport economics can be particularly important. Low-density waste such as foam occupies considerable space relative to its weight, which can make conventional recycling difficult or expensive. Densification changes those economics by reducing the volume transported.

Employee participation becomes part of waste management

Infrastructure alone is unlikely to maintain high diversion rates if employees do not separate materials correctly.

Best Buy therefore established employee-led "green teams" at its facilities. Team members support local waste diversion efforts and provide training and education to colleagues on waste management practices.

This operational element is significant because contamination remains one of the main challenges in commercial recycling systems. Materials placed in the wrong collection stream can reduce the quality and economic value of recyclables and, in some circumstances, cause entire loads to be rejected.

Embedding responsibility at facility level can also make it easier to identify waste streams that centralized sustainability teams may overlook.

Zero Waste Sits Alongside Wider Environmental Targets

The supply chain certification forms part of a wider environmental strategy at Best Buy covering emissions, energy, waste and product circularity.

The company has set a target to reduce operational carbon emissions by 75% by 2030 from a 2009 baseline and has a longer-term objective of reaching carbon neutrality by 2040. Best Buy reported that it had already reduced emissions by 74% by fiscal year 2025.

In July 2026, it also announced new solar installations in New York and California. One project introduced solar generation at a New York retail location, while additional capacity was installed near a California distribution center.

Waste performance outside the 29 certified supply chain locations, however, remains a separate challenge.

Best Buy reported a 69% waste diversion rate across its broader US operations in fiscal year 2025, compared with a goal of 85%. The company began applying an updated calculation methodology in fiscal year 2024 aligned with the US Environmental Protection Agency's waste diversion methodology.

The distinction is important when interpreting the company's zero waste announcement. Certification of the supply chain network does not mean Best Buy as an entire organization generates no waste or diverts more than 90% of waste across every part of its business. The TRUE milestone applies specifically to the company's 29 supply chain facilities.

A Model for Distribution and Logistics Operators

For retailers, manufacturers and logistics operators, Best Buy's program demonstrates how zero waste targets can be translated from corporate commitments into facility-level operating practices.

The measures involved are relatively practical: waste audits, material tracking, recycling infrastructure, equipment such as balers and densifiers, reusable transport packaging, and clear responsibility among employees.

Independent certification adds another layer by establishing defined performance thresholds and requiring facilities to document their processes rather than relying solely on company-wide claims.

The next challenge is maintaining those standards. Supply chain waste profiles can change as product mixes, packaging designs, suppliers, and logistics networks evolve. Maintaining diversion above certification thresholds therefore requires continued measurement and adjustment.

Best Buy's completion of certification across 29 facilities shows that a zero waste approach can be scaled across a large distribution network. For other businesses considering similar targets, the most transferable lesson may be that waste reduction is increasingly an operational efficiency issue as much as an environmental one.
