Australia is moving closer to a future as a green iron manufacturing powerhouse with the launch of the National Development Stream of the Green Iron Investment Fund.

The Albanese Labor Government says the initiative demonstrates its commitment to industries of the future, with green iron expected to play a key role in creating jobs, lifting regional economies, and adding domestic value. With $500 million in grant funding, the program is designed to stimulate private sector investment and build a globally competitive green iron industry at home.

Experts believe Australia is uniquely positioned to lead the international shift to green iron and steel. The country combines abundant mineral reserves, some of the world’s best renewable energy resources, and deep industrial know-how to seize this opportunity.

Analysis by the Minerals Institute of Western Australia suggests a single green iron plant could cumulatively add $85 billion to gross domestic product, deliver $2.4 billion each year in real income, and support around 1,540 jobs. A 2023 Accenture report goes further, estimating that a green metals industry could contribute up to $122 billion annually in export earnings by 2040.

As the world’s largest exporter of iron ore, Australia is well placed to help decarbonise steelmaking, which accounts for around 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The fund complements other measures to advance green metals production. These include a $2 billion Green Aluminium Production Credit, $750 million for green metals innovation through the Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund, $10 million for a CSIRO-led Green Metals Innovation Network, and $180 million via the Australian Economic Accelerator.

Grant funding will target early mover projects ready to begin commercial-scale green iron production by 2031. Proponents nationwide are invited to prepare applications ahead of the official launch on 28 October.
