CDP, the leading global platform for environmental disclosure, has released its 2024 A List, naming 112 cities and, for the first time, two U.S. states, California and Colorado, for exemplary environmental transparency and action. This year, 15% of scored cities achieved an A rating, up from 13% in 2023, marking a growing global commitment to climate leadership.
In 2024, nearly 1,000 cities reported data through the CDP-ICLEI Track platform. Of the 752 scored cities, 112 earned top marks. A List cities represent every inhabited continent, from Denver and Florence to Makati and Johannesburg. Europe leads with 48 cities, followed by North America (37), and growing participation from Latin America, Asia, Oceania, and Africa.
The USA tops the national chart with 29 A List cities. Notably, 23 cities joined the A List for the first time this year, reflecting an expanding global push for environmental accountability at the local level.
For the first time in CDP’s history, states and regions were scored and included in the A List. Out of 92 reporting sub-national entities, 75 were scored, and two U.S. states received an A, signifying a milestone in regional climate governance.
"Cities are on the frontline of the climate crisis," said Hanah Paik, CDP’s Global Director for Cities, States, and Regions." These A List actors are leading through transparency and bold action, setting a benchmark for others to follow."
With 83% of cities facing serious climate threats like flooding and heatwaves, CDP’s 2024 A List spotlights those stepping up to disclose, act, and drive sustainable progress amid rising global climate risks.
