Core Features
windPRO's modular structure allows users to select capabilities for specific development and operational requirements, while sharing project data across the wider software environment.
Wind Resource Assessment: METEO imports, cleans and analyzes measured wind data, while MODEL connects with WAsP, WAsP CFD and other CFD models to produce wind statistics and resource maps.
Energy Yield Calculation: PARK calculates Annual Energy Production (AEP) for individual turbines and wind farms, incorporating turbine power curves, wake losses, wind distributions, neighboring turbines and different layouts.
Layout & Performance Optimization: OPTIMIZE can optimize wind-farm layouts against AEP, LCOE or NPV, while accounting for constraints including turbine loads and noise.
Environmental Impact Assessment: Dedicated modules model noise, shadow flicker, zones of visual influence, radar interference and other impacts, with photomontage and animation tools available for visual assessment and project presentation.
Site & Electrical Engineering: SITE COMPLIANCE assesses turbine suitability against IEC 61400-1 requirements, while eGRID supports design and analysis of a wind farm's internal electrical network through to the grid connection point.
Operational & Financial Analysis: PERFORMANCE CHECK analyzes actual turbine production after construction, while WINDBANK provides financial evaluation.
Closing Insights
windPRO's breadth is particularly useful because wind-farm development involves interconnected decisions: changing turbine locations can alter energy yield, wake losses, loads, noise impacts and project economics. The software allows these issues to be evaluated within the same project environment rather than treating resource assessment and permitting constraints separately. Its BASIS module also provides access to global datasets and a turbine catalogue containing more than 1,000 manufacturer-approved models.
The platform has substantial international reach, with more than 6,000 activations across over 100 countries. EMD also supports windPRO with consultancy and training, while the software's modular licensing lets organizations assemble functionality around their particular work, from resource assessment to operational analysis.
The current version as of October 2026, windPRO 4.3, further develops the platform's optimization and modelling capabilities. It introduces joint optimization of turbine layouts and operating modes, allowing users to account for curtailment while optimizing project design. Other improvements include full ISO 9613-2 noise calculations within the layout optimizer, faster PARK and DECIBEL calculations, time-varying losses, improved GIS functionality and the ability to assess combined noise from wind turbines, solar PV and battery systems.
windPRO uses modular pricing, so the cost depends on the functions required. As of October 2026, the core BASIS module costs €1,700 for a perpetual Standard licence or €680 for a one-year licence, with additional modules purchased separately.
