Greenwashing Identifier (GWI) is an AI- and blockchain-powered platform developed by ImpactScope in collaboration with InsigAI to help organizations identify potentially misleading environmental claims. Designed for financial institutions, regulators, investors, and corporate sustainability professionals, the platform analyzes sustainability disclosures and public communications against regulatory expectations and available evidence. Rather than replacing human judgement, GWI provides a structured risk assessment that helps users prioritize reviews of potentially problematic claims. Its focus on transparency and explainable analysis makes it particularly relevant as scrutiny of sustainability-related disclosures continues to increase.

Core Features

The Greenwashing Identifier platform combines artificial intelligence with blockchain technology to evaluate sustainability-related claims using a transparent, evidence-based approach. Its principal capabilities include:

  • AI-Powered Greenwashing Detection: Uses artificial intelligence to assess sustainability claims and identify potential indicators of greenwashing.

  • Explainable Risk Assessment: Provides evidence-backed assessments that help users understand why particular claims may warrant further review.

  • Regulatory Alignment: Supports analysis against evolving sustainability disclosure expectations and regulatory guidance.

  • Blockchain-Based Audit Trail: Uses blockchain technology to enhance traceability and integrity of assessment records.

  • Disclosure Analysis: Reviews sustainability reports, marketing materials, and other corporate communications for potentially misleading environmental claims.

  • Portfolio and Investment Screening: Assists investors and financial institutions in evaluating greenwashing risks across companies and investment portfolios.

Closing Insights

Greenwashing Identifier (GWI) emerged from ImpactScope's research into the intersection of artificial intelligence, blockchain, and sustainability. The platform was developed in partnership with Insig AI, whose machine-readable corporate disclosure datasets and text interrogation technology underpin GWI's large language model and evidence-based analysis. The collaboration gained momentum through the Global Financial Innovation Network (GFIN) Greenwashing TechSprint, organised by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), where ImpactScope worked alongside regulators and international institutions to develop tools for identifying misleading sustainability claims.

An accompanying white paper presents GWI as a response to the rapid growth of sustainability disclosures and the increasing regulatory scrutiny of environmental claims. It argues that manual review of corporate communications has become impractical for regulators, investors, and companies, motivating the use of AI to screen reports, earnings calls, news articles, social media content, and other disclosures for inconsistencies or unsupported claims. Blockchain technology complements the AI by providing an immutable record of the analysis, improving transparency and auditability.

In 2025, GWI was selected for the IRCAI Global Top 100, an initiative of the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO, recognising AI solutions that contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Organizations seeking to strengthen governance over sustainability communications and reduce greenwashing risk may therefore find GWI a valuable addition to their compliance and due diligence processes.
