Core Features
The Environmental Benefits Calculator connects electronics processing data with standardized environmental calculations. Its capabilities focus on quantifying the benefits of circular IT activities and communicating these results to customers. Key capabilities include:
Avoided Emissions Calculation: Estimates greenhouse gas emissions avoided through electronics reuse, refurbishment and recycling by comparing these activities with relevant reference scenarios.
Asset-Level Environmental Assessment: Covers more than 300 categories of electronic equipment, using device characteristics, material composition and manufacturing emissions data to calculate environmental benefits.
Critical Metals & Material Conservation: Quantifies the conservation and recovery of materials, including copper, steel, aluminium, gold, silver and palladium, extending the assessment beyond carbon emissions.
Customer-Level Impact Reporting: Generates environmental reports for individual customer orders, with results broken down by equipment category and processing batch. This enables ITAD providers to communicate the benefits associated with specific transactions.
Verified Calculation Methodology: Applies Bloom's independently verified, ISO 14064-aligned methodology, using documented assumptions, emissions factors and system boundaries to support consistent calculations.
Operational System Integration: Integrates with ITAD management systems, including Makor ERP, allowing environmental calculations and customer reports to be incorporated into existing equipment processing workflows.
Closing Insights
Launched in March 2025, the Environmental Benefits Calculator was developed through a partnership between Bloom ESG and e-Stewards, the electronics recycling certification programme established by Basel Action Network. It provides a standardized approach to quantifying the environmental benefits of electronics reuse and recycling, addressing growing demand for credible customer-level sustainability reporting.
In 2025, Bloom partnered with EPC, Inc., which agreed to use the calculator across its operations and contribute equipment data covering 100,000 product types from more than 7,000 manufacturers. A separate partnership with Makor Solutions integrated the calculator into ITAD management workflows.
The calculator is available to electronics recyclers and refurbishers regardless of e-Stewards certification status. Interested organizations should contact Bloom to discuss applications, licensing and integration requirements.
