Connecting farmers and primary producers with food brands

Onye Dike
Updated by Onye Dike on September 1st, 2026
Biocode is a carbon footprint calculator built around a challenge specific to food companies: much of their climate impact occurs before ingredients reach the factory. The platform connects farmers and primary producers with food brands, allowing farm- and field-level emissions data to become emission factors for product footprints and corporate Scope 3 accounting. This gives companies an alternative to relying solely on industry averages for agricultural emissions. Biocode also covers corporate Scope 1–3 accounting and product LCA, while incorporating established methodologies and scientific sources into the calculation process. It is aimed at food brands, producers, farmers and businesses managing agricultural supply chains.

Core Features

Biocode uses an activity-based methodology: users provide information about activities, materials and processes, while the platform applies appropriate emission factors and converts greenhouse gases into CO₂ equivalents. Its key features include:

  • Corporate Carbon Footprints: Calculates organizational Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions in accordance with the GHG Protocol, with Excel import/export and transparent calculation sources.

  • Product Carbon Footprints: Performs cradle-to-gate carbon footprint assessments covering raw materials, sourcing, production and packaging. Users can also apply supplier-specific emission factors to improve product-level accuracy.

  • Primary Production Accounting: Provides dedicated models for agricultural production, including crops, poultry and pork, allowing food businesses to gather primary emissions data directly from producers and farmers.

  • FLAG Emissions: A dedicated calculator covers land-use emissions and removals in accordance with the GHG Protocol Land Sector and Removals framework and supports companies working with SBTi FLAG targets.

  • Emission Factor Database: Includes ready-to-use emission factors with their scientific sources visible to users. Recent automation also uses AI to match bulk-imported corporate activity data with suitable factors.

  • Scenario & Supply-Chain Analysis: Users can identify emission sources, update activity data, test alternative scenarios and collaborate with suppliers. Farm-level results can subsequently serve as emission factors in Scope 3 and product calculations.

Closing Insights

Biocode originated in 2017 through cooperation between Mtech Digital Solutions and the Association of ProAgria Centres, initially focusing on emissions from food production. That agricultural background remains central to the platform: instead of stopping at conventional company accounting, Biocode connects farm-level primary data with downstream product and corporate footprints. Customers demonstrate these different uses. HKFoods has integrated Biocode's calculation engine into its producer portal, Scandi Standard uses the platform across its broiler supply chain, while Helsinki Mills has used it for product carbon footprinting. Biocode’s Scope 1–3 and Product Carbon Footprint packages each start at €2,400/year, while the FLAG calculator starts at €2,900/year and the Farmer & Producer platform at €5,800/year. Enterprise packages are available for larger organizations with more complex requirements.
