Summary
The Ministry of Power is the Government of India ministry responsible for national policy and administration relating to the electricity sector. It has operated as an independent ministry since July 2, 1992, having previously formed part of the Ministry of Energy. Its responsibilities include long-term electricity planning, policy formulation, project appraisal and monitoring, power generation, transmission and distribution, and development of the sector's institutional and regulatory framework. The Ministry also administers major legislation including the Electricity Act 2003 and Energy Conservation Act 2001. Its remit covers thermal and hydropower alongside transmission, distribution, energy efficiency and wider electricity-sector development.
