Australian Energy Regulator (AER)

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) is Australia’s independent national regulator for electricity and gas markets. It regulates energy networks and monitors wholesale and retail energy markets under national energy legislation, with responsibilities including network revenue determinations, market compliance and enforcement, retailer authorization, consumer protections and the Default Market Offer. The AER is one of Australia’s three principal national energy market bodies, alongside the Australian Energy Market Commission and Australian Energy Market Operator. From 1 July 2026, it became a standalone Non-Corporate Commonwealth Entity, giving it direct responsibility for its staff and operations while preserving its independent regulatory decision-making.
