Resource Efficiency

Resource efficiency means generating greater economic or social value while using fewer natural resources and reducing waste, pollution and environmental impacts. It involves optimizing the use of energy, water, materials and land throughout the life cycle of products and services, from extraction and production to use, reuse and recycling. Businesses can improve resource efficiency through better processes, durable product design, repair, material recovery and waste prevention. Performance is often measured as resource consumption or environmental impact per unit of output or revenue. However, improved efficiency does not necessarily reduce total resource use: growing production can offset gains. Resource efficiency supports climate mitigation and a circular economy, but should be assessed alongside absolute consumption, emissions and other environmental outcomes.
