Radioactive Material

Radioactive Material refers to any substance containing unstable atomic nuclei that spontaneously release energy in the form of ionizing radiation as they decay toward a more stable state. This radiation can include alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays or neutrons. Radioactive materials occur naturally, such as uranium and radon, and can also be produced artificially for use in nuclear energy, medicine, research and industry. Their risk depends on the type and intensity of radiation, the quantity present, the duration of exposure and whether the material is outside or inside the body. Because ionizing radiation can damage biological tissue, radioactive materials are subject to strict rules covering handling, shielding, transport, storage and disposal.
