Perfluoropentanoic Acid (PFPeA)

PFPeA is a five-carbon perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid belonging to the PFAS group. It can occur as an industrial chemical, an impurity or a degradation product of fluorinated precursor substances. PFPeA is generally classified as a short-chain PFAS and is relatively soluble and mobile in water. Its shorter carbon chain means it typically has lower bioaccumulation potential than longer-chain compounds such as PFOA or PFNA, but it remains environmentally persistent. PFPeA has been detected in water, soil and other environmental media and is increasingly included in analytical programmes designed to measure a broader range of PFAS rather than focusing only on historically prominent substances such as PFOS and PFOA.
