Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA)

PFOA is an eight-carbon perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid and one of the best-known legacy PFAS. It was historically used as a processing aid in fluoropolymer production and has been associated with applications involving non-stick coatings, textiles, industrial processes and firefighting materials. PFOA is extremely persistent and can travel considerable distances through water and the environment. It can also accumulate in humans and wildlife, with exposure linked in scientific assessments to a range of potential adverse health effects. Its production and use have consequently been heavily restricted internationally. PFOA and related compounds are listed under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
