Perfluorohexanoic Acid (PFHxA)

PFHxA is a six-carbon perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid within the PFAS family. It has been used in or can result from fluorochemical production and the breakdown of precursor substances used in coatings, textiles, firefighting foams and other applications. PFHxA is considered a relatively short-chain PFAS and tends to be more mobile in water than many longer-chain compounds. Although it generally bioaccumulates less than substances such as PFOA, its environmental persistence means releases can remain in water and soil for long periods. PFHxA is increasingly subject to monitoring and risk assessment as regulators expand their focus from a small number of legacy PFAS to broader groups of fluorinated chemicals.
