Perfluorohexanesulfonic Acid (PFHxS)

PFHxS is a six-carbon perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid belonging to the PFAS family. It has historically been associated with firefighting foams, textile treatments, protective coatings and other fluorochemical applications. Despite having fewer carbon atoms than PFOS, PFHxS is highly persistent and can accumulate in humans and wildlife. Studies have found that it can remain in the human body for extended periods, contributing to concerns about long-term exposure. Its persistence, bioaccumulation and potential health impacts have resulted in increasing regulatory controls. PFHxS, its salts and related compounds were added to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants for global elimination, subject to the convention's requirements.
