Perfluoroheptanoic Acid (PFHpA)

PFHpA is a seven-carbon perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid belonging to the PFAS family. It may originate from industrial fluorochemical processes or from the environmental transformation of precursor compounds. PFHpA has been detected in groundwater, surface water and other environmental samples, particularly around locations historically associated with fluorochemical use or firefighting foam. Like other perfluoroalkyl acids, it is highly resistant to natural degradation because of its strong carbon-fluorine bonds. Its properties place it between shorter, more mobile PFAS and longer-chain substances that tend to have greater bioaccumulation potential. PFHpA is consequently included in many modern PFAS analytical methods and environmental monitoring programmes.
