Nylon
Nylon is a family of synthetic polymers known as polyamides, first developed commercially in the 1930s. It is used to manufacture strong, lightweight and abrasion-resistant fibres for clothing, carpets, ropes, fishing nets, automotive components and industrial applications. Common textile forms include nylon 6 and nylon 6,6, which have different chemical structures and processing requirements. Nylon is valued for its durability, flexibility and resistance to wear, but its production is energy-intensive and generally relies on fossil-based feedstocks. Recycling is possible, particularly for relatively clean and separated waste streams, although mixed fibres, additives and contamination can make the process more difficult.
