Carbon Registry

A carbon registry is a digital system used to record, track and manage carbon credits and other environmental units throughout their lifecycle. It stores information on eligible climate projects, verification activities, credit issuances, ownership transfers, cancellations and retirements. Each credit is typically assigned a unique serial number to reduce the risk of duplication or double counting. Registries provide an auditable record showing where a credit originated, which methodology and standard were applied, who currently owns it and whether it has been permanently retired. They are used by project developers, companies, governments, financial institutions and carbon market intermediaries. A registry does not by itself guarantee the environmental quality of a credit, but it is essential for market transparency, transaction integrity and credible carbon claims.
