Battery energy storage systems (BESS)
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are systems that store electrical energy in rechargeable batteries and release it when needed. They typically combine battery cells or modules with power conversion equipment, battery management systems, thermal controls, safety systems and energy management software. BESS can operate at residential, commercial, industrial or utility scale and are used for applications such as renewable energy integration, peak demand management, backup power, frequency regulation and grid balancing. They can help electricity systems manage fluctuations in supply and demand, particularly as more variable solar and wind generation is added to the grid.
