Overview
The Upcycling Seilerei workshop offers a unique opportunity for participants to engage in the craft of transforming textile waste into functional and aesthetic ropes and braids. This hands-on course, running from July 27 to July 31, 2026, is designed for individuals aged 16 and older, regardless of their background.
Course Details
Participants will explore design concepts, material science, and recycling principles while learning various techniques for converting garments into yarns and subsequently into ropes. The course will cover twisting methods using Urban Fibers machines, as well as hand braiding and weaving techniques. Each participant will have the chance to develop a personal or group project, ranging from simple objects to more complex woven constructions.
Instructors
Led by Tau Pibernat and Vera Castelijns from Urban Fibers, the workshop emphasizes a circular and regenerative approach to textile production. Urban Fibers is known for redefining textile production systems by transforming local post-consumer cotton waste into usable yarns, thus promoting sustainable practices in the textile industry.
Logistics
The course will be conducted in English, with German available if needed. Sessions will run from Monday to Thursday, 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM, and on Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The course fee is 420 euros, with a reduced rate of 380 euros for students, excluding material costs.
