Overview

The Eco Social Summer School 2026, themed "Welfare states in sustainability transformation: work, inequalities, and eco-social policies?", aims to foster an intensive learning environment for PhD candidates and early-stage researchers. This event will be held at the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) in Brussels from September 6 to 8, 2026.

Themes and Activities

Participants will delve into critical discussions surrounding the transformation of welfare states in the context of climate change and sustainability. The program will cover three main themes:

  1. Tensions and Transitions: Exploring the conflicts and potential alliances between ecological and social agendas.
  2. Welfare in Motion: Examining how welfare systems adapt to new inequalities and demands arising from planetary crises.
  3. Futures of Work & Democracy: Investigating the impact of sustainability transitions on labor markets and political representation.

The summer school will feature lectures from invited scholars, followed by discussions that encourage participants to challenge and deepen their understanding of the topics. Afternoon workshops will allow attendees to present their research, receive feedback, and engage in collaborative dialogue.

Application Process

The event is designed to accommodate a limited number of participants to ensure meaningful interaction. Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a CV and a research abstract of no more than 500 words via the Eco-Welfare Network submission link. The deadline for applications is February 13, 2026.
