SWISS partners with climate tech start-up neustark to scale carbon removal
Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has entered into a landmark agreement with Swiss climate tech start-up neustark to support the permanent removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. The multi-year deal makes SWISS the first airline to partner with neustark, reflecting its commitment to long-term climate solutions beyond fuel efficiency and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Under the partnership, SWISS will back neustark’s innovative approach to carbon dioxide removal (CDR), which stores CO2 permanently in recycled building materials. Neustark, a spin-off from ETH Zurich founded in 2019, has developed a process that injects captured CO2 into crushed concrete and other mineral waste, where it mineralizes and becomes locked away for hundreds of thousands of years. The treated material can then be reused in construction, such as for roads and recycled concrete.
Currently, neustark operates 38 capture and storage facilities across seven European countries and is rapidly expanding, with more than 20 additional projects in the pipeline. The company’s solution is certified by the Gold Standard, ensuring the carbon removal is measurable and permanent.
In a press release, Jens Fehlinger, CEO of SWISS, described the agreement as “an important and early step toward scaling this technology,” calling carbon removal a crucial part of aviation’s path to net zero. Neustark co-founder Valentin Gutknecht added that airlines like SWISS play a “pioneering role” in scaling up climate technologies in sectors that are hard to decarbonize.
The collaboration also represents a first-of-its-kind link between the aviation and construction industries, two major emitters, working together to scale permanent CO2 storage. For SWISS, it complements other sustainability efforts, including partnerships with Swiss climate innovators Climeworks and Synhelion.
With demand for carbon removal technologies rising, this cross-industry partnership highlights the growing importance of durable, science-based solutions to address hard-to-abate emissions.
